The brownfield development at Bryce Road in Dudley, West Midlands incorporates systems that conserve non-renewable and dwindling resources and greatly reduce waste and pollution - both in building construction - and in use.
This £1.5 million development features the UK's first Eco-Pod - a 230m² basement where visitors can study the design, fabrication and construction of the houses. Computer graphics, video records, products and displays support training and demonstration, giving a unique insight into the reality of sustainable development.
The development and Eco-Pod were officially opened in November 2000 by environmental campaigner, Dr David Bellamy.
The project won official Demonstration Project status from the Housing Forum, a facilitator for the Government's construction task force, charged with achieving quality and efficiency improvements in the UK's construction industry.
